Xbox Live's very own Major Nelson put out his weekly show (in MP3 form) which saw him chat it up with Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling. During the chat, Bowling revealed the latest numbers for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and confirmed to Nelson that over 13 million unique players are still cranking away on the game's online multiplayer modes.

VG247 has the scoop:
"The thing we learned the most [from Modern Warfare 1] was how much focus goes into multiplayer," said Rob when asked about what the team has learned from the first game and will be carrying through to Modern Warfare 2.

"I mean, Call of Duty 4 on Xbox Live just exploded. Right now we're at 13 million unique users on 360 and that's insane.

"The focus that goes into multiplayer…and that's why community specifically, is such a tent pole for Modern Warfare 2."
Yesterday, Infinity Ward and Activision Blizzard released the second teaser trailer for this year's follow-up title Modern Warfare 2. The official site for the sequel also went live, featuring a little background on the game plus media, and a link to sign up for pre-orders.

Bryn says: I still play Modern Warfare religiously online, but even these numbers left me somewhat agog. It's not very often that a console shooter (yes, I know it's on PC too) achieves a large share of the online shooter market like this. In fact, aside from Bungie's Halo franchise, I have to think that the Call of Duty series is the biggest online shooter series ever.
