What about the real game? That was the question on the minds of id Software fans after studio head John Carmack announced yesterday an iPhone version of post-apocalyptic racer/shooter Rage will be in the App Store by the end of the year. Now we know the answer: the real Rage will ship in September 2011.

On the main QuakeCon stage in Dallas this afternoon, designer Tim Willits and members of the Rage team demoed the upcoming title simultaneously on a PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 before announcing the studio was prepared to draw a line in the sand for the first time. Rage will not "be done when it's done," Willits said, it will be released on September 13 2011 in North America and two days later in Europe.

"We're going to have the biggest, coolest, most badass launch possible," Willits said, generating a raucous cheer from the audience.

Elsewhere at Quakecon today, Call of Duty creators and Respawn Entertainment founders Vince Zampella and Jason West took part in the Building a Blockbuster panel alongside Willits and Bethesda's Todd Howard.

Fans hoping for news of an id/Bethesda/Respawn collaboration were disappointed to learn West and Zampella were there because they're long-time friends with Howard. And West and Zampella stuck to topic, not providing any updates on Respawn's first game, other than to say they are now looking at technology options.

Sharkey says: I'm surprised id is providing a firm release date and I'm even more surprised we've still got more than a year to wait for Rage. I figured it would be an early 2011 release. Sigh.
