What's old is new again... again. Voltron, the defender of the universe, is forming up for a return to TV, toys, and in a new series of multiplatform video games from THQ.

Variety reports that World Event Productions, which owns the rights to Voltron, has already locked down deals with Nicktoons, Mattel, and THQ to bring Voltron back in a major reboot of the 26-year-old franchise.

"WEP has been working overtime to reboot Voltron, including launching Voltron Force as an animated series that bows on Nicktoons and other international broadcasters later this year as 26 half-hour episodes," Variety states. "Timing of the launch of THQ's first titles will coincide with the rollout of the TV show."

A live-action feature film is also in the works, Variety notes, but production on the film has been delayed due to a legal battle over rights between WEP and Toei Company.

Sharkey says: With GI Joe, Transformers, Thundercats, and now Voltron getting the reboot treatment, all of my beloved toys/cartoons of the 1980s are back... all except my second favorite ever: Star Blazers, aka Space Battleship Yamato. That cartoon was the best, mayne. Thanks to the power of the tubes, I just discovered a live-action movie based on the TV show was recently released in Japan. I'll have to track that one down.
